Trans & Gender Questioning – Family Work

June 12 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

This workshop will assist participants to respond to the needs of all family members when a loved one is transitioning gender. When a family member questions or transitions their gender it has an impact on the whole family. Families have a variety of responses: fear, shame, anger, self-blame, worry, hope, pride – sometimes all within the one family depending on your position in the family.

Assisting families to manage these responses and at the same time affirm the person transitioning is not easy. As with families, practitioners may struggle with using correct language and knowing how to support best outcomes for the transitioning person.

The workshop includes interactive exercises, case studies and research findings. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions, raise issues and share their own experiences in a friendly and supportive environment. At the end of the session, participants should have concrete ideas and strategies for working with families when transgender experiences are present.

Learning outcomes

  • To become familiar with the latest research about the experience of transgender people, especially at the high risk time of coming out
  • To develop an awareness of risk and protective factors for a transitioning person and their family
  • To generate increased comfort in being/sitting with families struggling with affirming a transgender experience
  • To increase knowledge of referral options and support needs of transgender people and their families
  • To have a greater awareness of personal values and responses to gender variance.
