Ombudsman’s Report on ‘Management of Maintenance Claims Against Public Housing Tenants’ Published

This much anticipated report prepared by Victoria’s Ombudsman, Deborah Glass, has revealed a number of systemic inequities in the system of maintenance claims lodged against public housing tenants by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

The Ombudsman found that DHHS had been engaging in ‘unfair management  of maintenance claims over many years’ and that the department failed to ‘take tenant’s circumstances into account, resulting in unreasonable decisions and unjust outcomes for tenants’.

As a result of the investigation, the Ombudsman made 18 recommendations to DHHS, all of which the department has accepted and will ensure that we have a fairer system of maintenance claims  in public housing management.
